Format of a project plan:

A
  • Stages: natural high level break points in the project life cycle (ex: a house)
  • Work package: represent the clusters of work within the stage, usually focused on a key deliverable
  • Activities: individual components of work within the work packages that must be undertaken to complete the project
  • Milestones: significant events which should be used to monitor progress
  • Deliverables : each of the key deliverables defined in the project definition should be shown in the plan

6 steps to plan a project:

A

1 - Business objectives
2 - Define the scope and list the key deliveries
3 - Identify dependecies between key deliverables
4 - Breakdown the project into Work Packages based on life cycle stages and deliverables
5 - Prepare the summary plan for the entire project
6 - Prepare a detailed plan for at least the next stage, if not more, including resource needs and costs
