culture
the explicit and implicit patterns for living, the dynamic system of commonly agreed upon symbols and meanings, the deep structure of knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, law, customs behaviors, traditions, and/or habits that are shared and make up the total way of life of a people.

cultural universal
an element, pattern, trait, or institution that is common to all human cultures on the planet

cultural relativism
the principle that an individual human's beliefs and activities should be understood in terms of his or her own culture

ethnocentrism
the tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of one's own culture

cultural pluralism
small groups within a larger society maintain their unique cultural identities

cultural congruence
occurs with a teacher's respect for the cultural background of his or her students

external elements of culture
shelter, food, arts, religious structures, government, technology, language

internal elements of culture
gender roles, family structure, values, customs, worldview

assimilation
the process by which individuals adopt the behaviors, values, beliefs, and lifestyle of the dominant culture, neglecting or abandoning their own culture in the process

acculturation
adapting to a second culture without necessarily giving up their first culture

biculturalism
being able to function successfully in town cultures

accommodation
when members of the mainstream culture adapt in ways to a minority culture, the members of which also adapt in ways to the majority culture

phases of acculturation
the distinct stages of emotional ups and downs in the process of experiencing a new culture

euphoria/honeymoon period
1st state of acculturation- results of excitement and fascination with new culture

culture shock/cultural fatigue
2nd stage of acculturation -- comes with frustration by disorienting cultural cues
