MODULE 8 Flashcards
(16 cards)
is a procedure, done under General anesthesia in which small electric currents are passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure. ____ causes changes in brain chemistry that can quickly reverse symptoms of certain mental health conditions
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
Ect procedure routinely takes
5-10 minutes excluding prepation
Indications for electroconvulsive therapy
Severe depression
Treatment-resistant depression
Severe mania
Catatonia
particularly when accompanied by detachment from reality (psychosis), a desire to commit suicide or refusal to eat
Severe depression
severe depression that doesn’t improve with medications or other treatments
Treatment resistant depression
a state of intense euphoria, agitation or hyperactivity that occurs as part of bipolar disorder Other signs of ___ include impaired decision-making, impulsive or risky behavior, substance abuse, and psychosis.
Severe mania
characterized by lack of movement, fast or strange movements, lack of speech, and other symptoms it’s associated with schizophrenia and certain other psychiatric disorders. In some cases, ___ is caused by a medical illness
Catatonia
Risks when performing electroconvulsive therapy
Confusion
Memory Loss
Physical Side effects
Medical Complications
occuring immediately after treatment, lasting several minutes to several hours, more severe in older adults
Confusion
some clients develop retrograde amnesia (trouble remembering memories before treatment), these problems usually resolve within a few months after completion of therapy
Memory Loss
Physical Side effects of ect
Nausea
Headache
Jaw pain
Muscle pain
Medical Complications of ect
Tachycardia
Hypertension
Is used throughout the procedure to record electrical activity in the brain including episodes of seizures
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
important pre-therapy considerations
• client is placed under general anesthesia
• electrode pads are placed on your head
• muscle relaxant is administered
• inducing a brief seizure
to prevent potential aspiration and to help minimize bradyarrhythmias in response to electrical stimulants
glycopyrrolate (robinul) or atropine
medications to be given during ECT
short acting anesthetic (brevital)
muscle relaxant (succinylcholine)
100% oxygen by mask via positive pressure
