Molecules and inorganic ions Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are organic molecules?
Biological molecules containing carbon (e.g carbs, lipids, proteins)
What elements do carbohydrates contain?
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What elements do lipids contain?
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What elements do proteins contain?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
What elements do nucleic acids contain?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus
What is a monomer?
Smaller units that combine to make large molecule (polymer)
What is a polymer?
Large molecule made of many repeating units of monomers joined together by chemical bonds
What is a condensation reaction?
Removal of H2O to form a chemical bond between two molecules
What is a hydrolysis reaction?
Addition of H2O to break a chemical bond between two molecules
What is an ion?
Atom with an electric charge
What is an inorganic ion?
Ion that doesn’t contain carbon (some exceptions)
What is the difference between a cation and a anion?
Cation = ion with a positive charge
Anion = ion with a negative charge
What are some cation examples?
- calcium CA2+
- sodium NA+
- potassium K+
- hydrogen H+
- ammonium NH4+
- iron Fe2+
What are some anion examples?
- chloride CI-
- phosphate PO43-
- hydroxide OH-
- nitrate NO3-
- hydrogencarbonate HCO3-
