Molecules- Lipids Flashcards
(8 cards)
3 facts about lipids
-they are insoluble in water
-they contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
-the 2 main types for us are triglycerides and phospholipids
What is the role of phospholipids in the body
they provide flexibility and transfer of lipid soluble substances across the membrane
How do lipids create insulation in the body
Slow conductors of heat so storage under the skin helps retain body heat and provide electrical insulation as myelin
How do lipids create protection in the body
Fat that is stored around the body
What is an ester bond
A bond in a triglyceride where each fatty acid bonds with glycerol a condensation reaction and three molecules of water
What are phospholipids made of
One molecule of glycerol, two fatty acid chains and one phosphate molecule
State two functions of lipids in the body
Protection and insulation
Fat protects some organs in the body
What is the key different between a phospholipid and a triglyceride in terms of structure
Phospholipids are a sphere with a hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tails. Triglycerides are E shaped with 3 fatty acid chains and one glycerol molecule
