What is rheumatoid arthritis
A type of arthritis where your immune system attacks the tissue lining the joints on both sides of your body, it is a chronic autoimmune disease
Describe the mechanism of damage for RA
The inner membrane covering your joints becomes sore and inflamed, releasing cytokines that can damage nearby areas
What 4 areas of the body can be damaged by cytokines
-bones
-cartilage
-tendons
-ligaments
5 symptoms of RA
-pain
-stiffness
-swelling, warm redness
-tiredness, lack of energy
-sweating
What are 2 complications of RA
-carpel tunnel syndrome (compression of nerves in the wrist)
-systemic inflammation to the lungs, heart, eyes and blood vessels that can lead to other complications
