Molecules Vocab Flashcards
(17 cards)
Molecule
2 or more atoms bonded together
Chemical Bond
Connection between atoms
Model
Representation of an object
Chemical Formula
The atoms (letters and numbers) that make up a molecule
Chemical structure
The specific way that atoms are arranged
Crystal
Structure of atoms or molecules in a 3D pattern
Polymer
Structure of molecules in a repeating chain pattern
Extended structure
A molecule whose atoms occur in a constant ratio + repeating pattern
Ratio
A quantity relationship between 2 things
List 2 differences between crystals and polymers
They have a different pattern and they have different atoms
C3H4 has how many elements? Atoms?
2 elements, 7 atoms
What is an element
One type of atom and it is represented by one square on the periodic table
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest unit of matter that has the properties of an element
What is a molecule?
A molecule is 2 or more atoms bonded together
When making molecule models, what do the beads represent? The sticks?
The beads represent the atoms and the sticks represent the bonds
Can you have 2 different crystals that are made of the same atom? Give an example. How is it the same? How is it different?
Yes because diamonds and graphite are both only made up of carbon. It is the same because they have the same atoms. It is different because they have a different structure.
Glucose and fructose both have an atomic composition of C6 H12 06 but they are different molecules. What is most likely the major difference between them?
The structure
