Moment 3: Dr Jekyll Was Quite at Ease Flashcards
(12 cards)
‘to some five or six old cronies, all intelligent, reputable men and all judges of good wine’
Reference to the typical Victorian gentlemen - expectations.
‘Hosts loved to detain the dry lawyer’
Subtle uncommon use of humour.
‘his unobtrusive company, practising for solitude, sobering their minds in the man’s rich silence after the expense and strain of gaiety’
Boring for the readers - list + sibilance, calming + monotone.
‘smooth faced man of fifty’
Not outside often - subtle reference to him always at home.
‘but every mark of capacity and kindness’
He’s a wealthy man (doesn’t do a lot of work).
Contrast (juxtaposition) - hints to his duality (Hyde).
Jekyll: “hide-bound pedant”
Negative + tension (anger) - Lanyon’s conventional science vs transcendental science of Jekyll.
Jekyll: “an ignorant, blatant pedant”
A pedant is someone very particular about details. Jekyll’s unconventional ideas didn’t wash. He’s clearly fallen out with Lanyon.
‘The large handsome face of Dr. Jekyll grew pale to the very lips, and there came a blackness about his eyes’
Gothic imagery - mentioning of Hyde.
Jekyll: “a very strange one - a very strange one”
Repetition and dash implies that Jekyll doesn’t know what to do - withholding info from Utterson.
“My good Utterson,” said the doctor, “this is very good of you, this is downright good of you”
Repetition of good - Jekyll is trying to flatter to get out of a difficult conversation.
Jekyll: “this is a private matter”
Jekyll withholding information - losing patience with Utterson’s questions.
‘Utterson reflected a little, looking in the fire’
Separated, shortened sentence adds suspense to Utterson’s reaction.
