Metaphor - London was lit by the full moon like a candle - Gothic.

Assuming women’s aspirations is only to do with love and romance.

Impersonating the maid as all innocent and focused only for men.

Descriptive language of Carew to paint an image for the reader that he appears innocent, well mannered - may build empathy for when he gets murdered.

Building subtle tension that Mr Hyde is suspicious - not many people seem to be fond of him, (mysterious effect).

Metaphor - his anger is reactive, it can spread.

Simile - Hyde’s crazy nature.

Simile - comparison to his actions being somewhat animalistic - compound adjective.
‘hailing down a storm of blows’
Metaphor - shows his unnatural anger which isn’t suitable for the Victorian gentlemen.

Contrast between ‘pall’ (death + dark imagery), to ‘heaven’ - God is being challenged.

Liminality - aggressive verb and personifying the wind to emphasise a strong, powerful atmosphere when describing the air of Gothic London.

Liminality - links to Jekyll’s relapse - Hyde and Jekyll are becoming one.

Simile / juxtaposition - liminality, fog messes with light.

Simile - described as being burnt - satanic imagery (HELL) - common theme.
‘the fog would be quite broken up’
Secrecy + pea soupers - everything here is not for the public eye, dark / secret side of London (London is personified).

Personification - creepiness.
Contrast emphasises area’s deprivation.

Simile - apocalyptic vision.
