- What to do with it: reinforce the fort (look strong), withdraw/abandon the fort (look weak), bring food and supplies to the fort (middle road option)

Early Fighting in the East
First Battle: Bull Run (July 21, 1861)
- McDowell routed by Beauregard
- Lesson taught:
- Longer war than anticipated
- Lincoln gets 75,000 (90 day volunteers); overwhelm south and things go back to normal
- McDowell was made North retreat
- South does not go after them
- General McClellan takes over for North

-gets in trouble in the Battle of Shiloh Church (April 6-7, 1862)
Southern general killed and their army moved down south
almost looses a chunk of his army
-Lincoln looks at Grant a solid man, move up ranks, later to be President
A danger year for the Union 1862
Peninsular Campaign
-McClellan; reluctant to use Union troops
-does to Virginia Peninsula, meets Robert E. Lee
-Stonewall and Lee stop McClellan
-Lincoln doesn’t want McClellan anymore
Lee invades North on his own
-McClellan and Lee at Antietam
-McClellan stops and Lee goes back south
-6400 killed 17000 wounded
-McClellan does not follow; Lincoln removes him

- Women can do what men could do (job wise)

Black Troops:
- After the battle of Antietam
- Emancipate slaves in south
- strategic reason to get rid of slavery
- large amount for the northern army
- War first about keep union together; after Emancipation Proclamation- about freeing slaves (Jan 1, 1863)
- will not protect private property anymore
- Slaves run north, protected by law
- moral cause increase
- Things are changing, when black troops walk through south (mindset)
- Putting life on the line: how can rights can be questioned now? (idea of nationalism, nationhood)
