Monitoring during Sedation Flashcards
(17 cards)
What does the monitoring machine measure
Sp02, HR, BP
things to be aware of while monitoring
pulse oximiter and nail polish
finger tapping with pulse oximetre
cold hands
layer up clothing
what does pulse oximeter measure
attached to patients finger
measures oxygen saturation and pulse rate
what is normal oxygen saturation
98%+
what percentage of oxygen stauration requires prompt action
sats drop below 96%
sats below 90% needs immediate action
what are warning sounds on the machine indicating
pulse dropping below 50 or above 120
what does it mean if oxygen saturation drops below 90%
inhibited respiratory or cardiovascular activity
what to do if oxygen saturation drops below 90%
ask the patient to take deep breaths
give 100% oxygen via nasal cannula at 2-4litres/min
what is the pulse drops below 50 (bradycardia) or rises above 120 (tachycardia)?
bradycardia indicates a vasovagal attack, vagal stimulation or hypoxia
tachycardia usually results from anxiety, inadequate anaesthesia or poor pain control
readings outside normal mean the tx should pause/ stop so that the cause can be corrected
how many minutes of sedation time is there usually
30-40 minutes
what can be used to maintain mouth opening
mouth prop
what are some airway considerations
careful aspiration and retraction to protect airways
secure cotton rolls with floss
count cotton rolls
rubber dam for endo
keen an eye on sp02
what should you do at the end of the dental procedure
return patient slowly to an upright position
ensure the patient can stand
escort the patient to the recovery room
patient should be directly supervised by a member of dental staff
continue to monitor
post op instructions for IV sedation
written and verbal instructions given to patient and escort
patient should rest at home
no drinking alcohol, operting machinery, cooking, boiling kettles or signing important documents for the rest of the day
how much time after the last increment of the drug was administered can the patient be discharged
1 hour
what should be checked before discharging the patient
the patient can stand and walk without assistance
final blood pressure should be taken
venous cannula should not be removed until the patient is ready to be discahrged and has fully recovered
the patient and escort must leave together
what needs to be recorded in the notes
names of those presnet
the drugs administered - dose, batch number and expiry date
record that consent was obtained
quality of sedation and any adverse reactions (emotional or physical)
post op instructions were issues and arrangements of follow up care
