Monomers and Polymers Flashcards
Monomers def
an individual “block” that forms with other monomers to form a polymer
Polymers def
A large molecule formed by many monomers
What happens during a dehydration synthesis reaction?
The joining of monomers to form a polymer by taking H2O out. One monomer donates OH- and the other donates H+ to form an H2O molecule.
What happens during a hydrolysis reaction?
Polymers are broken back into monomers by using H2O to break down polymers. Cleave off 1 monomer at a time. Water is split into H+ and OH- and they attach to enzymes.
Describe the relationship between all of the terms: monomers, polymers, dehydration synthesis, and hydrolysis
Polymers are made up of monomers. Dehydration synthesis is the process of joining monomers to make a polymer. Hydrolysis is the process of breaking down polymers into monomers. Dehydration synthesis is the reverse of hydrolysis.
True or False:
Monomers are made up of polymers
false; polymers are made up of monomers, not the other way around
True or False:
hydrolysis is made up of the root hydro and suffix -lysis. Hydro means water, and -lysis means loosening
