Should the maintenance of mooring lines/equipment be apart of the ships planned maintenance?

Yes it should be apart of the PMS and records of this should be kept onboard for inspections

  • There should be a visual inspection and it should be greased as per the manufactures instructions.
  • Gearing and clutches should be checked to ensure they operate smoothly.
  • Brakes should be closely examined to ensure the brake band material thickness is adequate and the condition of brake lining is satisfactory.
  • Drum ends inspected and free from rust, paint or any damage that could reduce its operational performance.

What maintenance should be done on fairleads?

A

Fairleads should be check that they turn freely and must be free from rust or anything which could cause abrasion to mooring lines.

What maintenance should be done on mooring ropes?

  • Mooring ropes should be covered by tarpaulins or on long voyages stowed away.
  • The ropes/store should be away from heat, sunlight and extreme cold.
  • Ropes should not be stored near chemicals, detergents, rust removers, paint strippers and substances capable of causing damage to the ropes.
  • The ropes should be flaked on the deck prior to arrival.
  • The lines should be paid out in a controlled manner under supervision.

A

The monkeys fist should be made of soft rope and not contain any weighting materials.

What maintenance should be done on stoppers?

A
  • When using synthetic mooring lines a stopper is a piece of synthetic rope, which is used to keep the tension in the mooring line when transferring from the drum to a bitt.
  • Stoppers should be approx 2m in length and have a smaller diameter than that of the mooring line.

A

The lowest possible breaking load for a particular rope product.

A

The maximum safe force that a piece of lifting equipment, lifting device or accessory can exert to lift, suspend, or lower a given mass without risk of breaking - the SWL should be clearly marked on the equipment
