Courage
Knowing what to fear and responding accordingly.
Courage Vice of deficiency, Cowardice
Not facing your fear, knowing what is right but choosing not to be courageous.
Courage Vice of Excess, Rashness
Pretending to be courageous when one is not, merely imitating courage.
Temperance
Moderation in relation to pain and pleasure, a mean in regards to pleasure.
Aristotle would view the man who never drinks just as harshly as the man who drinks too much.
Temperance vice of deficiency, Insensibility
Falling short in regards to pleasure, not finding joy in pleasurable activities.
Temperance vice of excess, Intemperance
Seeking excessive pleasure.
Liberality vice of deficiency, Illiberalityq
Not giving enough out of fear of being taken advantage of (or greed).
Liberality vice of excess, Prodigality
One who spends too much. Never saving, always giving (giving to the wrong people?).
Munificence
Giving lavishly of one’s wealth, the willingness to spend freely.
Munificence vice of deficiency, Pettiness
Stinginess, not giving due to lack of importance.
Munificence vice of excess, Vulgarity
Spending grossly, spending without cause.
Magnanimity
High-mindedness, man sees himself as worthy of great things.
Magnanimity vice of deficiency, Low mindedness
Being unworthy of great things.
Magnanimity vice of excess, Vainglory
Seeking glory or great thing for vain and empty reasons.
Boastfulness
Bragging, unwillingness to change. We must recognize good as the source of our excellence.
Humility and honesty go hand in hand.
Contentiousness
Refusal to make peace
Obstinacy
The obstinate individual is too attached to his own opinion (nothing is better than my plan/idea), cannot be swayed. Obstinacy perverts intellect.
Discord
Stubborn refusal to surrender to another, even, and especially, if we are wrong. Discord perverts will.
Disobedience
A personal conviction that my way is the only way to proceed.
You must serve God and community, society starts at the domestic level.
