What is Happiness?
The ultimate end/purpose of human existence.
What is Telos
The end/goal
What is Eudaimonia?
Man’s ultimate happiness
What is Reason?
Using logic. Leads you to happiness
What is Ethos?
Character. How one acts to achieve Telos
What is Good?
Something virtuous to be desired/sought after
What is Truth?
Something objective. Declaring what is.
Faith (theological virtue)
Belief in God as creator. If we believe in god we commit ourselves.
Hope (theological virtue)
The desire for the kingdom of heaven. If we have faith, hope naturally follows; if there is a god, there must be a heaven
Love (Theological virtue)
Love is charity, charity is love. Love of God for his own sake, and love of neighbor and ourselves for the sake of Gods love.
What is love?
Willing the good of another
Prudence (cardinal virtue)
Prudence is right reason in action; discerning the true good among alternatives.
Justice (cardinal virtue)
Giving due to God and neighbor. Respect for God as creator and respect for neighbor because of human dignity.
Fortitude (cardinal virtue)
Persistence and pursuit of the good during hardship. Not courage, but how you use courage to live a more moral life.
Temperance (cardinal virtue)
Moderation in the attractions of pleasures; ex: we should eat to survive, not because we can.
What is Virtue?
Having a purposeful disposition. Lying in the mean and using right reason. Not extremes.
Pride is…
The beginning of every sin. The cornerstone of all things immoral
It is characteristic of pride…
To be unwilling to be subject to any other, especially God.
If something is self-seeking…
It becomes prideful
Pride leads to…
The seven capital sins (the other six capital sins)
What is Vainglory?
Seeking glory for vain (empty) reasons.
What does man truly desire, how does pride relate to it?
What man truly desires is excellence, pride is telling yourself you have already achieved it.
The glory we seek is vain if…
We seek glory for the wrong things, from the wrong people, or for the wrong reasons
What kind of commitment does pride have with excellence?
Pride (Vainglory) expresses an imperfect commitment to to excellence, and therefore an imperfect connection to God.
