Frontier
Land that is inhabited by indigenous people or uninhabited, and where settlements become sparse.
The Monroe Doctrine
President James Monroe’s declaration in 1823 that the Western Hemisphere was no longer open to European colonization.
Battle of New Orleans
General Andrew Jackson defends New Orleans from British troops in the largest battle of The War of 1812, not knowing that peace was declared two weeks earlier in Belgium.
The War of 1812
Congress declares war on Great Britain. Between 1812 -1814 the US attempts to take over Canada. The British invade Washington D.C., burn the US Capitol and White house, and President Madison flees for his life. Fort McHenry is attacked all night and the flag still waved in the dawn’s early light.
Spiritual
A religious folk song of African American origin. Often sang by enslaved people while working to keep hope alive.
Trail of Tears
the removal of Cherokee from Georgia to Indian Territory in 1838 and 1839.
Folk Art
Art made by ordinary people (as opposed to classically trained artists) using traditional methods.
Early American Music
No longer only heard in church or large concert halls, early American music was upbeat with fiddles and often included dancing, like Square Dances.
Early American Literature
American writers begin finding their own voices in the early 1800’s, setting themselves apart from the classical European writers. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” “Rip Van Winkle,” “Last of the Mohicans,” and Davy Crockett’s autobiography full of his true stories of the frontier create a new atmosphere and culture for the Great American Novel.
