Subject
the part of a sentence indicating what or whom the sentence is about. Normally includes a main noun.
Noun
person, place, thing, or idea
Pronoun
replaces a noun
Antecedent
a word or phrase that is later replaced by another word (Maria would be the antecedent of she).
Predicate
the part of a sentence or clause containing a verb and stating something about the subject.
Verb
action or state of being. Includes “to be.”
Verb Phrase
a combination of helping verbs and main verbs (shall, will, have, do, be, etc)
Complement
words necessary to complete a phrase’s meaning (I will be studying)
Infinitive
“to” + unconjugated verb. Can be a noun, adjective, or adverb, but isn’t a verb. “to make”
Independent Clause
An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought. An independent clause is a sentence.
Dependent Clause
A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. A dependent clause cannot be a sentence. Often a dependent clause is marked by a subordinating conjunction.
Conjunction
joins clauses or sentences or words
Coordinating Conjunctions
For And Nor But Or Yet So
Create a loose connection between roughly equal elements
Subordinating Conjunctions
link a dependent clause to an independent clause or make a clause dependent
after, although, as, as if, because, before, even if, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, whatever, when, whenever, whether, and while.
Preposition
a word or group of words that is used with a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, location, or time, or to introduce an object.
Most Common Prepositions: about after against among around as at before between by during for from in into like of on out over through to under with without
Adjective
describes a noun
Adverb
describes a verb, adjective, or adverb
Article
type of adj that signals & describes a following noun (a, an, the)
Active Voice
the do-er is clear “That man killed Sally”
Passive Voice
the do-er isn’t stated “Sally was killed”
Gerund
verb used as a noun (I went skiing)
Participle
verb used as an adjective
Simple Present
complete current action.
Present Progressive
ongoing current action formed with “to be” + present participle
