Mr Birling Analysis Flashcards
(3 cards)
“Unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable”
“The Germans don’t want war”
Mr Birling shows dramatic irony, causing him to seem foolish and become despised by the audience.
Could be symbolic for the Birling family being “unsinkable” but also demonstrates his ignorance
“Absolutely” creates certainty which makes it even worse
“A man has to make his own way - to look after himself - and his family too, of course!”
Mr Birling shows that his priority is self preservation rather than being focused on his family and others.
There is a dismissive nature to looking after his family as if it was an afterthought - reinforces Priestley’s criticism of Capitalism
“make his own way” reflects Mr Birling’s journey from working class to upper-middle class
“Now look at the pair of them - the famous younger generation who know it all”
Mr Birling criticises Sheila and Eric for their shifts in attitude to reflect a more socialist standpoint.
Shows a generational divide between the young generation who can change, and the old generation who are stuck in their ways
