Q

What is this research support ?

A

For example in Baddeley study where he found that we mix up words that sound similar when we use our STM but tend to mix up words that have similar meanings when we use our LTM. Further support comes from Jacobs study where capacity in the short term was around 5-9 items. Peterson and Peterson’s study showed that in duration in the short term is 18 seconds and in the long term can last up to a life time. In Bahrick study it showed participants after 15 years of graduation was 90% and after 48 years it was 70% for photo recognition. Free recall was 60% after 15 years and 30% after 48 years showing LTM can last up to a lifetime

Q

(2) What is the counterpoint to the first eval point ?

A

It does not show real world application as we form memories relating to all sorts of things like people’s face, facts or places. Many of the studies which support the MSM being Jacobs who used digits and letters, Baddeley who used words and Peterson and Peterson who used consonant syllables

Q

What does this tell us about MSM ?

A

This shows MSM is not a valid model of how memory works in our everyday lives where we have to remember more meaningful information

Q

(3) What is a limitation of MSM ?

A

It is that prolonged rehearsal is not needed for information to transfer to LTM. In MSM it argues the more you rehearse something, the more likely it is to transfer to the LTM. Watkins argue that the type of rehearsal is more important than the amount.

Q

What do Watkins argue about the type of rehearsal ?

A

He argued that elaborating rehearsal is needed more for long term storage. This is when you link info to your existing storage and info can be transferred to LTM without prolonged rehearsal.
This suggest MSM does not fully explain how long term storage is gained
