(29 cards)
What is the axial skeleton?
The axial skeleton consists of the skull, vertebral column, and thorax.
What are the components of the skull?
The skull includes the cranium ,hyfoid, ossicles and facial portion.
How many cranial bones are there?
There are 8 cranial bones.
How many facial bones are present in the human skull?
There are 14 facial bones.
What is the function of the hyoid bone?
The hyoid bone is a U-shaped bone under the mandible used for muscle attachments.
What are ossicles?
Ossicles are the 3 ear bones that transmit sound waves through the middle ear.
What is the vertebral column’s role?
The vertebral column encloses the spinal cord.
Sternum
the anterior bone of the thorax called?
How many pairs of ribs do humans have?
Humans have 12 pairs of ribs./ sternum
What does the appendicular skeleton include?
The appendicular skeleton includes the shoulder girdle and upper extremities.
What bones make up the upper extremity?
- Clavicle
- Scapula
- Humerus
- Ulna
- Radius
- Carpals (8)
- Metacarpals (5)
- Phalanges (14)
What is the function of the clavicle?/ shoulder girdle.
The clavicle is anterior and located between the sternum and scapula.
What is the role of the scapula?
The scapula is posterior and anchors muscles that move the arm.
The humerus
the proximal arm bone?
What are the two bones of the forearm?
- Ulna (medial bone)
- Radius (lateral bone)
How many tarsal bones are there?
There are 7 tarsal bones.
What is the thigh bone called?
The femur.
What is the kneecap referred to as?
The patella.
What are the components of the lower extremity?

- Metatarsals (5)
- Phalanges (14)
What is the medial bone of the leg?
The tibia.
What is the lateral bone of the leg?
The fibula.
What is the function of the tarsal bones?
form the ankle.
