Multi-Store Model of Memory Flashcards
(14 cards)
Memory
Series of interconnected systems in parts of the brain that allow for encoding, storage, and retrieval of events and information
Declarative memory
Type of LTM that stores explicit information that can be consciously recalled
Episodic memory
Memory of specific events, experiences, and personal experiences tied to specific contexts
Semantic memory
Memory for general knowledge, facts, concepts that are not tied to specific experiences
Sensory memory
Holds sensory information for very short periods
Short term memory
Temporary storage system for holding and manipulating limited amounts of information
Long term memory
Permanent storage system with unlimited capacity and duration
Rehearsal
Process of repeatedly reviewing information to maintain it in short term memory or to transfer it to long term memory
Primacy effect
Tendency to remember items better from beginning of a list
Recency effect
Tendency to remember items better from the end of a list
Implicit memory
Unconscious knowledge, used but not often recalled directly
Procedural memory
Skills naturally performed
Emotional memory
Conditioned responses and feelings
Atkinson and Shifrin’s MSM steps
Environmental stimuli -> sensory memory -> (attention) STM -> (encoding/retrieval) <- LTM
