an arrangement of text in a graduated series to help readers scan and know where
to enter and exit the text
descender
A piece of a letter that extends below the baseline.
ascender
A part of a lowercase letter that rises above the main body of the letter (above the
x-height).
x-height
The height of a typeface’s lowercase letters (disregarding ascenders and descen-
ders)
baseline
The imaginary line on which most letters and other characters sit.
