Multicellular organisms Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells working together to perform a specific function
Tissues are fundamental units in biology that contribute to the structure and function of organisms.
What is an organ?
A structure made up of different tissues working together to perform a function
Organs are complex structures that have specific roles in the body, such as the heart or lungs.
What are stem cells?
Unspecialised cells that can divide and become specialised
Stem cells have the unique ability to develop into various cell types in the body.
Where are stem cells found?
In embryos and some adult tissues (e.g. bone marrow)
Stem cells are crucial in development and tissue repair.
What are the uses of stem cells?
To repair damaged tissues or treat diseases like diabetes and Parkinson’s
Stem cells hold potential for regenerative medicine and therapeutic applications.
What is mitosis?
Cell division that produces two identical daughter cells
Why is mitosis important?
For growth, repair of tissues and maintaining chromosome numbers
What is the chromosome compliment?
The correct number of chromosomes in a cell (e.g. 46 in humans)
what are specialised cells?
Cells adapted for a specific function (e.g. sperm, red blood cells, root hair cells.)
What is the nervous system made of?
Brain, spinal cord and nerves
What is CNS?
The central nervous system: brain and spinal cord
What are neurons?
Nerve cells that carry electrical impulses
