Muscels Flashcards
(39 cards)
Fascia
A thin sheath of fibrous tissue enclosing a muscle or other organ.
Aponeuroses
A pearly white fibrous tissue that takes the place of a tendon in a sheet like muscle having a wide area of attachment.
Myofibrils
Of elongated contractile threads found in striated muscle cells
Myosin
A fibrous protein that forms the contractile filaments of muscle cells and is also involved in motion in other types of cells
Actin
A protein that forms together with myosin the contractile filaments of muscle
Striations
A smooth muscle
I bands
A pale band across a striated muscle fiber that consist of actin.
A band
Band across striations in striated muscles that contain myosin filaments and appear dark under a light microscope.
M line
A attachment site for thick filaments. In the center of the A band
Sarcomere
A structural unit of a myofibril in striated muscle.
Sacroplasmic reticulum
Specialized type of smooth ER that regulates the calcium ion concentration in the cytoplasm of striated muscle cells
Transverse tubules
Extension of the sarcolemma that penetrate into the centre of the skeletal and cardiac muscle cells
Muscle tone
Is a response to nerve impulses
Sustained contraction
Summation and recruitment together
Recruitment
An increase in the number of motor units being activated
Tetanic contraction
When the resulting forceful sustained contraction lacks even partial relaxation
Summation
When there are many stimulus but the muscle only reacts one time is the process of summation
Period of relaxation
When it returns to the normal length
Period of contraction
The latent period is the muscle pull at its attachment
Latent period
The delay between the stimulus and the time it takes for the muscles fiber to respond
Twitch
A small contraction that only lasts a fraction of a second
Myogram
When the muscle contract it pulls
All-or-none response
A muscle will not contract if the contraction has already fully been bone
Cisternae
The 2 enlarged portions of the sacroplasmic reticulum near the region where the actin and myofibiril filaments overlap
