Muscles Flashcards
What are four functions of muscles?
Moving substances, regulating organ volumes, creating heat, stabilising body position, moving bones to create movement
What is the main function of muscles?
Allowing movement by moving the bones.
What is voluntary muscle control?
Consciously moving muscles and being aware of the movement.
What is involuntary muscle control?
Not consciously moving muscles and being unaware of the movement.
What type of control does skeletal muscle have?
Voluntary.
What is the function of skeletal muscle?
Gives the body shape and allows movement.
What are features of skeletal muscle?
Striated, cylindrical, multiple nuclei.
What type of control does cardiac muscle have?
Involuntary.
What is the function of cardiac muscle?
Makes up the walls of the heart.
What are features of cardiac muscle?
Striated, branched, single nucleus.
What type of control does smooth muscle have?
Involuntary.
What is the function of smooth muscle?
Protects vital organs in the body.
What are features of smooth muscle?
Non-striated, tapered rods, single nucleus.
What is contractility in muscles?
The muscle can shorten to generate force.
What is extensibility in muscles?
The ability for the muscle to be stretched.
What is elasticity in muscles?
The muscle’s ability to resume resting length after stretching.
What is excitability in muscles?
The ability to respond to signals from the CNS.
