Q

What is bile and what does it do?

A

Bile is produced in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and emulsifies lipids to increase surface area for digestion.

16
Q

How long is the large intestine?

A

1.5m long and roughly 8cm wide.

17
Q

What enters the large intestine from the small intestine?

A

Remaining undigested food with surface-level vitamins and minerals.

18
Q

What does ‘good bacteria’ in the large intestine do?

A

Breaks down organic compounds and absorbs essential minerals and vitamins.

19
Q

What are feces composed of?

A

Water, undigested food, bacteria, and mucus.

20
Q

What signals the brain that feces are ready to be eliminated?

A

Pressure on the walls of the rectum.

21
Q

What causes diarrhea?

A

Too much fiber or too much bad bacteria in the intestine.

22
Q

What causes constipation?

A

Not enough soluble fiber in the intestine.

23
Q

What does the liver do?

A

Produce bile and sends it too the gallblader.

24
Q

What does the pancreas do?

A

secrete pancreatic juices and enzymes such as, Pancreatic amylase, pancreatic protease and pancreatic lipase.

25
What does the gallbladder do?
Store bile until it is required in the small intestine.
26
Structure of villi
Villi are small finger like structures that line the small intestine and there are millions of them in the small intestine.
27
Function of villi
They increase the surface area of the small intestine by lining the surface area and too absorb nutrients into the bloodstream.
28
Chemical digestion in the small intestine
Mainly done with the aid of enzymes sent from the pancreas (protease, lipase, amylase). However, the small intestine also produces lactase (lactose breakdown) and sucrase (sugar breakdown).
29
Mechanical Digestion in the small intestine
Segmentation moves the food around with muscular contractions and peristalsis uses muscle contractions to move partially digested food to the large intestine.
30
What enzymes are produced in the stomach
Pepsin which is a type of protease and is used in gastric juices. And also gastric lipase.
31
Absorption in the large intestine
When the undigested foods reach the large intestine the surface level vitamins and minerals will be absorbed into the blood stream.
32
Types of teeth
Incisors, Canines, premolars, molars
33
How many incisors are in the mouth
8. 4 in each jaw.
34
How many canines are in the mouth
4. 2 in each jaw
35
How many premolars are in the mouth
8. 4 in each jaw
36
