Origin: styloid process; pulls tongue upward and backward
hyoglossus
Origin: hyoid bone; pulls tongue downward and flattens it
sternocleidomastoid
Origin: manubrium of sternum and clavicle; insertions: mastoid process; flexion of cervical vertebrae and rotation of the head
diaphragm inhalation
contraction of this muscle, causes muscle to flatten
diaphragm exhalation
relaxation causes it to move superiorly
external intercostals
extend downward and anteriorly from rib to rib, pulls ribcage up and downward during inspiration (11 prs)
internal intercostals
extends upward and anteriorly from rib to rib, pulls ribcage up and outward during inspiration (11 prs)
pectoralis minor
connects ribs 3-5
pectoralis major
connects ribs 1-9; Origin: medial half of clavicle, costal cartilage, external oblique; insertion intertubercular sulcus of humerus; flexes, adducts, and rotates the humerus.
latissimus dorsi
Origin: vertebrae T7-L5, iliac crest; insertion intertubercular sulcus of humerus; adducts, extends, and rotates humerus
deltoid
Origin: acromion, the spine of the scapula, clavicle; insertion: deltoid tuberosity of humerus; abducts, flexes, and extends the arm
coracobrachialis
Origin: coracoid process of scapula; assists in flexion of the arm
teres major
assists in extension of arm
