Muscles Of the Head Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the Buccinator?
Buccinator is a muscle of the face located in the area of the cheek, also known as the ‘buccal’ region.
Where does the Buccinator originate and insert?
Buccinator originates on the alveolar processes of the mandible and maxilla, and inserts onto the angle of the mouth.
What is the primary function of the Buccinator?
Buccinator primarily assists in mastication by squeezing the cheeks closer together while the jaw is depressed.
How does the Buccinator assist in whistling and smiling?
The Buccinator is primarily used for whistling by squeezing the cheeks together, and it also assists in smiling.
What is the innervation of the Buccinator?
Buccinator is innervated by the buccal branch of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII).
What happens to the Buccinator in Bell’s Palsy?
If a person is affected by Bell’s Palsy, the buccinator becomes paralyzed, which produces slurred speech!
What is the masseter?
The masseter is a muscle of the face that attaches to the mandible and is primarily involved in mastication.
What are the primary functions of the masseter?
The masseter elevates the mandible and allows chewing to take place.
What are the origins and insertions of the masseter?
The masseter originates on the zygomatic arch and maxilla, and inserts onto the coronoid process and ramus of the mandible.
What is the innervation of the masseter?
The masseter is innervated by the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V).
Did you know about the masseter?
The masseter is the strongest muscle in the body by proportional size!
What is the Temporalis?
Temporalis is a muscle of the cranium, named after the temporal bone, which is its origin.
Where does the Temporalis originate?
Temporalis originates on the temporal fossa, the shallow depression on the temporal bone on the lateral side of the cranium.
Where does the Temporalis insert?
Temporalis inserts onto the coronoid process of the mandible.
What is the action of the Temporalis?
Temporalis assists in elevating the mandible and performing mastication, along with masseter.
What innervates the Temporalis?
Temporalis is innervated by the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V).
How does the mandibular nerve branch off?
The mandibular nerve branches off the trigeminal nerve behind the zygomatic arch and extends inferiorly towards the mandible.
What is the origin of the Temporalis?
Temporal Fossa
What is the primary action of the Temporalis?
Mandible Elevation
