musculoskeletal and nervous system Flashcards
(16 cards)
Elbow Hygroma?
= false bursa
Chronic trauma is predisposing
Prone to infection
Can try padding and various restraint ideas
Surgical dissection frequently successful
Neurological issues with Coon hound paralysis?
Chase raccoons, get saliva of raccoons containing disease - profound paralysis
Neurological issues with tick paralysis?
Same as. Soon hound paralysis
Neurological issues with tetanus?
Muscles rigid - bacteria produces toxin
Dogs are resistant
Cats get tetanus
Neurological issues with Myasthenia Graves?
a disorder caused by a breakdown of the transmission of impulses from nerves to the muscles. Muscles don’t contract causing affected dogs to become weak (#1 symptom)
What are some breeds that are at risk for Myasthenia Graves?
jack russell terriers, springer spaniels, smooth fox terriers, Dachshunds.
What test can test for Myasthenia Graves?
Tensilon test

Intervertebrtal Disc Disease?
the disc degenerates, the central gel loses its fluid, and is less resilient to normal wear and tear.
Pressure or trauma can cause the calcified material to bulge or explode into the nearby spinal canal, which houses the spinal cord, a process called herniation
Hemilaminectomy?
objective: decompress spinal cord and remove extruded disc materials
Joint surgery for deficient cranial cruciate ligament injury?
The cranial cruciate ligament is one of the most important stabilizers inside the canine knee (stifle) joint, the middle joint in the back leg.
Test to test for cranial cruciate ligament injury is?
palpation techniques that are used to assess the CrCL include the ‘cranial drawer test’ and the ‘tibial compression test.’ These tests can confirm abnormal motion within the knee consistent with rupture of the CrCL.
If broken, there will be an exaggerated movement of the tibia and fibula
Looking for positive drawer sign
Medial patellar luxation?
shallow grove in femur, falling off ledge usually small dogs poodle chiwawa
Osteochondrosis lesions?
pathophysiology of OCD is death of subchondral bone with lack of support to the overlying hyaline cartilage - out grows blood supply
cracks, breaks
Saucer shaped defect in the humeral head - acute pain
Occurs in large breeds - puppy - don’t overfeed
ulnar osteotomy?
radious subluxating from humerus
asynchronous
ulna continuing to grow
radius arrested growth
What are some skills that a technician needs for ortho assisting?
closed fracture management
bandages, splints, casts, radiographs, patient nursing and client instructions
open orthropedic surgery for fractures
inventory and set up - instruments and implants
mastering the hanging leg prep
