Mutations During Meiosis Flashcards
(7 cards)
How does a gene mutation occur
A change in the base sequence of chromosomes
What happens in a genetic mutation
- mutation changed amino acid coded for
- changed primary structure which is the sequence of amino acids
- this changes the tertiary structure
- as the h, ionic and disqualified bridges form in different places
- changes 3d shape and 3 function
Why do not all base substitutions cause a change in the sequence of amino acids
Due to the degenerate nature of the genetic code
What are the 3 mutations
Substitution mutation
Frame shift mutation
Non disjunction mutation
What is a substitution mutation
One base is swapped for another
Often doesn’t have an affect due to degenerate
Only affects 1 amino acid coded
What is a frame shift mutation
Insertion or deletion of a base occurs
All following codons are affected
Large effect -> prim stcrure-> tertiary-> diff 3d
What is a non disjunction mutation
Sister chromatids don’t separated in meiosis 2 leading to extra chromosomes
