Dramatic monologue: has one speaker the whole way through (duke)
Duke believes his wife had an affair and a man from the family of his next wife he wants to marry comes and he says take a seat look at my ex wife and let me tell you all about her
Context
Patriarchy: the idea of society dominated by men, what makes the duke powerful but also makes him weak
The Duke is a person that abuses his power, he thinks power allows him to do whatever he wants and get away with it but to this day this woman still has some control over him
Since none puts by the curtain i have drawn for you, but I
Juxtaposition: shows the weakness of the duke, he believes it gives him power and authority as he’s the only one that can show her, but shows how insecure he is as he is holding on to any sign of power over his wife, she still has control over him even though she is gone
Foreshadowing: foreshadows and eventual downfall, she was the one woman he wasn’t able to control
E’en then would be some stooping; and i choose Never to stoop.
Sibilance
Enjambment: shows his thought process and how he is angry, his emotions are taking over, by him telling his wife what he doesn’t like about her he would be lowering himself down to her level, he sees his wife as a second class citizen
Then all smiles stopped together
Caesura: irregular pause, shows how her life was cut short
Symbolism: together, he saw her flaws and then everything ended at the same time, implying he killed her
