· 1968: American Indian Movement (AIM) founded: Red Power movement; pan-Indianism; direct action seeking ‘native sovereignty’; Indian Civil Rights Act repeals Public Law 280
· 1969: Nixon announces the end of termination; Indians of All Tribes (IAT) and AIM occupation of Alcatraz
· 1970: Native American Rights Fund (NARF) formed to provide legal assistance to tribes e.g. land reclamation
· c1970: self-determination policy
· 1972: AIM ‘Trail of Broken Treaties’ and occupation of BIA offices (NIYC also involved)
· 1973: AIM occupation of Wounded Knee; reversal of termination begins with Menominees regaining federal trust status (Menominee Restoration Act)
· 1974: Oneida v Oneida: land reclamation
· 1975: Indian Self-Determination Act and Indian Education Act: increasing control over education, health and social services provision
