Characterized by depressions running across the width of the nail plate. May be caused by serious illness or injury.
Beau’s Lines
Characterized by dark, purplish spots on the nail bed due to small injury
Bruised Nailbed
Nail may turn a variety of colors. Could indicate surface staining, systemic disorder, or poor blood circulation.
Discolored Nail
Characterized by a thin, white nail plate that is more flexible than normal. May be caused by improper diet, internal disease, medication, or overfiling.
Eggshell Nail
Damaged skin around the nail plate becomes split or torn. Can be trimmed carefully
Hangnail
Characterized by visible redness, pain,swelling, broken skin or puss.
Infected Finger
Whitish spots of discoloration of the nails. May be caused by minor injury to the nail matrix.
Leukonychia
Darkening of the fingernails or toenails caused by an increase in melanocytes. May appear as a black band extending from the base to the free edge or cover the entire nail.
Melanonychia
Nail surface pitting, roughness, onycholysis, and bed discoloration. May be evenly or randomly spaced. May appear as if it was filed with a coarse abrasive/ragged.
Nail Psoriasis
Abnormal stretching of the eponychium or hyponychium around the nail plate. Do not push back

Bitten Nails
Onycophagy
Abnormal split or brittle nails that appears as surface roughness on the nail plate. May be caused by injury to the matrix, excessive exposure to cuticle remover, etc
Onychorrexis
Aka Trumpet Nail. Increased nail curvature of the free edge. May curl upon itself or be deformed on one sidewall.
Pincer Nail
Aka folded nail. Highly curved nail plate often caused by injury to the matrix. Often leads to ingrown nails
Plicatured Nail
Lengthwise grooves in the plate, often mistake for ridges. Seen in normal aging.
Splinter Hemorrhageu
Damage to the capillaries under nail, gives the appearance of lengthwise, small splinter underneath the nail plate.
