Q

Adding an H+ ions to an oxyanion?

2 H+ ions?

A

*Hydrogen followed by oxyanion name.
*adds +1 to oxyanions charge for each H+ atom
Ex.
Carbonate + hydrogen = hydrogen carbonate
CO3 2- + H+ = HCO3 -

2H+ atoms:
Dihydrogen + anion name
Ex. Dihydrogen + phosphate = dihydrogen phosphate
2 H+ + PO4 -3 = H2PO4 -

Rules for naming Molecular Compounds
1. Name farthest to the left is written first. exceptions: *O and Cl *O and I *O and Br - In these cases O is written last 2. If both elements are in the same row lowest one is named first 3. Name of second element is given suffix -ide 4.Greek prefix is given to indicate the number of atoms of each element. exception: Mono- is not used on the first element ever
