nasm ch 1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Obesity
Being considerably overweight & refers to a person w a BMI of 30 or greater or at least 30 lbs overweight for recommended height or weight
Muscle imbalance
Alteration of muscle length surrounding a joint
Overweight
Person w a BMI of 25 to 29.9 or who is between 25 and 30 lbs over recommended weight for height
BMI Calc
703* (weight(lbs)/height^2(in^2) - or - weight (kg)/weight(kg)
Blood lipids
cholesterol and triglcerides. carried in the bloodstream by protein molecules known as high density lipoproteins and low density lipoproteins
Which is good cholesterol and which is bad
Good is HDL, bad is LDL
Healthy cholesterol levels
Healthy: < 200 mg/dL
Borderline: between 200 and 239 mg/dL
High-risk: >240mg/dL
Diabetes mellitus
chronic metabolic disorder caused by insulin deficiency which impairs carbohydrate usage and enhances usage of fats and proteins
Type 1 diabetes
pancreas does not produce insulin or cells have become insulin resistant. blood sugar is not optimally delivered to cells resulting in hyperglycemia - high blood sugar
Type 2 diabetes
- associated w obesity
- accounts for 90 - 95% of all diabetes
- produce adequate amounts of insulin but cells are resistant and do not allow insulin to bring adequate amounts of blood sugar (glucose) into the cell
Deconditioned
A state of lost physical fitness, which may include muscle imbalances, decreased flexibility, and/or a lack of core and joint stability
Proprioception
The cumulative neural input to the central nervous system from mechanoreceptors that senses position and limb movement
Proprioceptively enriched environment
An unstable (but controlled) environment where exercises are performed that causes the body to use its internal balance and stabilization mechanisms
Three adaptations to training
physiologic, physical, performance
Physiologic adaptations to training
- improved cardio respiratory efficiency
- enhanced beneficial endocrine (hormone) and serum lipid(cholesterol) adaptations
- increases metabolic efficiency
- increases bone density
Physical adaptations to training
- decreased body fat
- increased lean body mass
- increased tissue tensile strength
performance adaptations to training
- strength
- power
- endurance
- flexibility
- speed
- agility
- balance
Phases of training
smaller divisions of training progressions that fall within the three building blocks of training
muscular endurance
a muscles ability to contract for an extended period
neuromuscular efficiency
the ability of the neuromuscular system to enable all muscles to efficiently work together in all planes of motion
Superset
Set of two exercises that are performed back to back without any rest time between them
Rate of Force Production
Ability of muscles to exert maximal force output in a minimal amount of time.
Prime mover
The muscle that acts as the main source of motive movement
Percent of americans over age 20 that are overweight, what % of that and # that are obese
- 66%
- 43%
- 72 million
