NASM CPT - Unit 2 Flashcards
Define Biomechanics
The science concerned with the internal and external forces acting on the human body and the effects produced by these forces.
What is the anatomic position?
It’s a reference point to describe anatomic locations. In this position the body stands straight with the arms at the side and palms facing forward.
What does “superior” mean?
A location above a given reference point.
What does “inferior” mean?
A location below a given reference point.
What does “proximal” mean?
A location nearest to the center of the body or reference point.
What does “distal” mean?
A location farthest to the center of the body or reference point.
What does “anterior” (or ventral) mean?
On the front of the body
What does “posterior” (or dorsal) mean?
On the back of the body
What does “lateral” mean?
Positioned towards the outside of the body.
What does “medial” mean?
Positioned near the middle of the body.
What does “contralateral” mean?
Positioned on the opposite side of the body.
What does “ipsilateral” mean?
Positioned on the same side of the body.
What is the Sagittal plane?
An imaginary bisector that divides the body into left and right halves.
What is Flexion?
A bending movement in which the relative angle between two adjacent segments decreases.
What is an Extension?
A straightening movement in which the relative angle between two adjacent segments increases.
What is Hyperextension?
Extension of a joint beyond the normal limit or range of motion.
What is the Frontal plane?
An imaginary bisector that divides the body into front and back halves.
What is Abduction?
A movement in the frontal plane away form the midline of the body.
What is Adduction?
A movement in the frontal plane back toward the midline of the body.
What is the Transverse plane?
An imaginary bisector that divides the body into top and bottom halves.
What is Internal rotation?
Rotation of a joint toward the middle of the body
What is External rotation?
Rotation of a joint away from the middle of the body
What is Horizontal abduction?
Movement of the arm or thigh in the transverse plane from an anterior position to a lateral position
What is Horizontal adduction?
Movement of the arm or thigh in the transverse plane from a lateral position to an anterior position
