Q

What is the difference between an alkali and a base?

A

Alkalis are specifically 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 while bases are both 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 and 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞.

13
Q

Why is Universal Indicator useful?

A

Universal Indicator is useful because it gives a spectrum of colors depending on the strength of the acid or alkali added.

Q

What is litmus?

A

Litmus is a type of indicator that can only show one color and cannot be changed with a different substance. It is made with lichens.

15
Q

What is PH, what is the PH scale, and what is it measured as?

A

PH stands for potential hydrogen and measures the acidity from 1 to 14. The lower the number, the higher the acidity, and the higher the number, the more basic it is.

16
Q

How does neutralization work?

A

A base will neutralize an acid, and vice versa. Then, a salt and water is formed.

17
Q

What is acid rain?

A

Acid rain is a type of rain that majorly damages wildlife. Two common examples of acid rain are nitric and sulfuric acid. Nitric acid comes from nitrogen and oxygen which are used to power up cars in the engine. These nitrogen oxides go in the air and cause nitric acid to form in the rain. Sulfuric acid comes from fossil fuels being burned that have sulfur in them.

18
Q

What are PH indicators?

A

PH indicators can be indicators (litmus, thymolphthalein, and methyl orange), universal indicators, and PH meters

19
Q

What are PH meters?

A

PH meters are devices that used electrodes to measure acidity
