Natural Selection Flashcards
What is DNA
DNA is made up of molecules called nucleotides
What are Nucleotides
A nucleotide is one of the structural components, or building blocks, of DNA and RNA.
What is Chargaff’s Rules
state that DNA from any cell of all organisms should have a 1:1 ratio of pyrimidine and purine bases and, more specifically, that the amount of guanine is equal to cytosine and the amount of adenine is equal to thymine.
Who were Watson and Crick
Chemists who discovered the double helix of DNA
Who was Rosalind Franklin
chemist who was best known for her role in the discovery of the structure of DNA
What are Mutations
the changing of the structure of a gene
What is Adaptation
a change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment.
What are Species
a kind or sort of animal
What is Evolution
the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth
What are Fossils
Preserved bones and are usaly found by paleontologists
What is a Fossil Record
A term used by paleontologists to refer to the total number of fossils that have been discovered, as well as to the information derived from them
Who was Charles Darwin
A person who developed the theory of evolution
What is a trait
a distinguishing quality or characteristic
What is Selective Breeding
two animals in an attempt to produce offspring with desirable characteristics or for the elimination of a trait
What is Natural Selection
the process whereby organisms better adapt to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
