Protist,fungi + Plants Flashcards
Protist
any of a diverse taxonomic group and especially a kingdom of eukaryotic organisms that are unicellular and sometimes colonial or less often multicellular
Heterotroph
an organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances
Eukaryote
an organism consisting of a cell or cells in which the genetic material is DNA in the form of chromosomes contained within a distinct nucleus
Decomposer
an organism that decomposes organic material
Parasite
an organism that lives in or on another organism and benefits by deriving nutrients at the hosts expense
Host
an animal or plant on or in which a parasite or commensal organism lives
Fungi
any of a group of unicellular, multicellular, or syncytial spore-producing organisms feeding on organic matter
Spore
a typically one-celled, reproductive unit capable of giving rise to a new individual without sexual fusion
Lichen
a simple slow-growing plant that typically forms a low crustlike, leaflike, or branching growth on rocks, walls, and trees
Nonvascular plant
They lack roots, stems, and leaves and are low-growing, reproduce with spores, and need a moist habitat
Vascular plant
a plant that is characterized by the presence of conducting tissue
Gymnosperm
a plant that has seeds unprotected by an ovary or fruit
Angiosperm
a plant that has flowers and produces seeds enclosed within a carpe
Photosynthesis
the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water
Cellular respiration
a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate, and then release waste products
