Natural Selection & Adaptations Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the name of the scientist who in the 1800’s went on an expedition to the Galapagos Islands?
Charles Darwin
What did Darwin notice about the finches?
All finches have a common ancestor
What are the four types of environmental pressures?
- not enough food
- shortage of water
- not enough space
- may get eaten
What is the natural selection often called?
“survival of the fittest”
What is the process in which organisms with favorable traits tend to survive and pass on these traits to their offspring?
Natural selection
What is camouflage?
When animals develop coloring that helps them blend with their surroundings. They are a structural adaptation
What is mimicry?
Mimicry is another type of structural adaptation. It occurs when one species looks like another species.
Why is mimicry helpful?
It is helpful because predators avoid harmful species and have a hard time telling the two species apart, so they avoid both.
Why is camouflage helpful?
It is helpful because camouflaged organisms survive and reproduce. This is because they cannot be easily found by predators.
