CG Nav Standards
Does an electronic position on an electronic chart constitute a fix?
Yes
CG Nav standards:
What constitutes a fix on a paper chart?
The intersection of lines of position from at least three prominent points of land fixed and/or celestial objects with a separation of 15° or greater.
CG Nav standards:
How often shall you take fixes with paper charts?
No more than 30 minutes apart; at least every 15 minutes in restricted waters.
CG Nav standards:
Define estimated position.
A dead reckoning position modified by additional information, which itself is insufficient to establish a fix.
CG Nav standards:
What 4 methods can be used to verify fixes?
1) soundings
2) ATON
3) RADAR or other electronic means
4) seaman’s eye
CG Nav standards:
Do small boats equipped with SINS have to plot fixes on paper charts?
No
CG Nav standards:
When is SINA data considered up-to-date?
If it has been corrected within six months of permanent chart change.
CG Nav standards:
What is Mode II navigation?
Operating ECINS as primary navigation entering VIS/RAD LOPs. This mode is largely used as backup or in the event primary positioning is lost.
CG Nav standards:
What is Mode III navigation?
Traditional paper navigation using approved positioning source with VIS/RAD LOPs to verify.
STA Nav standards:
What is the purpose of the Fathometer offset?
To compensate for the display available depth from the sensor location on the hull to the actual lowest point of the vessel
Sta Nav standards:
What shall the Fathometer offset be set to on the RB-S?
0 ft
Sta Nav standards:
What is the operational draft for the RB-S?
6’ Notify the OIC anytime the coxswain needs to break navigational draft.
Sta Nav standards:
Define shoal water.
Water depth less than the navigational draft of each boat.
Sta Nav standards:
Define restricted waters.
Waters within 1000 yards of hazards to navigation, shoal water or inward of any demarcation line. Our entire AOR is in restricted waters. Restricted waters require a fix every 3 minutes.
Sta Nav standards
Define coastal waters
Waters seaward of restricted waters to 10 NM and require a fix every 15 minutes.
Sta Nav standards:
Define open ocean.
Waters seaward of 10 NM and require a fix every 30 minutes.
Sta Nav standards:
What’s the audible depth alarm set to?
6 ft
Sta Nav standards:
What’s the cross track error alarm set to?
0.04 NM (80 yards)
What are the 4 charts used at STA San Francisco?
18649
18650
18651
18653
What are the bounds of the north AOR?
37-50.00N and northward to Point SaN Pedro.
What are the bounds of the central AOR?
35-50.00N and south to 37-40.00N
What are the bounds of the South Bay AOR?
Southward of 37-40.00N
