What are the different types of ice that develop?
A
Open Pack Ice = Frozen sea water, fairly open, breaks up and drifts about so ships can manoeuvre around.
Close Pack Ice = Frozen sea water that is more compacted.
Very Close Pack Ice = Very compacted, with icebergs present.

How to identify areas of open water?
A
A water sky indicates open water, identifiable by the reflection of water upon the clouds which forms dark spots.
