Composition of NC Board of Pharmacy
6 members (all NC residents): 5 RPhs, 1 public representative
How are members of BOP selected
RPhs elected by pharmacists (must have 10 person petition or be appointed by board)
Public rep appointed by governor (cannot be healthcare provider)
What type of authority does BOP have?
Injunctive - can prevent person from practicing or pharmacy from operating
Types of suspension imposed by Board
- Active - Rph does not practice during specified amt of time
- Stayed - “probation,” must not violate any laws during specified amount of time, but allowed to practice
- Summary - immediate suspension of license before hearing occurs
After revocation from board, how long must someone wait to make a petition?
At least 5 years from effective date (unless <5 years, then must wait until suspension is over)
If board denies application, how long until application can be submitted again?
2 years
Hours of practical experience required for NC Pharmacy license
1500 (must be registered intern)
If earning from employment, intern must notify board first
Reciprocity licensing requirements for out of practice pharmacists
Up to 2 years: 15 hours of CE for each year (5 live), plus MPJE
2-5 years: 500 internship hours, 15 hours CE each year (5 live), MPJE
5+ years: 1500 internship hours, take/pass NAPLEX and MPJE
Doesn’t apply those continuously licensed as RPh in another state for at least 2 years prior to NC application
RPh Renewal Requirements (expiration and CE)
Expire 12/31 annually (60 day grace period)
15 hours CE yearly (5 live) (can earn 5 hours for 160 hours of precepting student from NC school)

1/2 hours pharmacy is opened or 32 hours per week (whichever is less)

How long may a limited service permit have a temporary PM or Assistant PM after previous PM leaves?

How often does a PM or assistant PM need to perform an in-person visit for limited service permits?
Aux med inventory/automated dispensing device/direct to pt delivery system - once per year
Dispensing by NP or PA/County health dept or other govt entities with RN dispensing - once weekly
How much must a PM be present for limited service permit?
half the hours of pharmacy hours or 20 hours, whichever is less (this is for sites where people are dispensing medications, not for direct to patient/automated)
When is a pharmacy permit considered lapsed?
March 1st
(After 31st, pharmacy will close and must re=apply)
