Sheriff Bell recounts sending a boy to the gas chamber.
Chapter I
- Chigurh kills Deputy Haskins, then a man to steal his car.
- Moss hunts for antelopes and finds trucks, dead men, a dying one asking for water, money. Drives back home to the Desert Aire trailer park, hides the money, lies to his wife.
Chapter I
Goes back in the night to check on the dying man, brings water. Barely escapes the men waiting for him, jumps in the river, gets shot, realizes he must hurry back.

Sheriff Bell recounts old family house. The stone water trough in the back. Dreams of his father.

Ed Tom walks around “that ground.” Talks to his daughter.

Chapter IX
- Chigurh returns the money, offers his services.
- Carla Jean returns from her mother’s funeral. Chigurh is waiting for her at home. They talk. Offers her a coin toss. He shoots her.
Chapter IX
- A car hits Chigurh three blocks away. Breaks arm, ribs, cuts his head and leg. Two teenage boys help him; one gives him his shirt.
- They take Chigurh’s gun from his truck.
- Bell visits his uncle Ellis. They discuss age, the county, uncle Mac’s death. Ed Tom confesses to Ellis about his behavior during WWII.

- Man washes his car covered in blood outside of Balmorhea.
- Bell heads for Van Horn early in the morning. Passes a burning
Chapter VIII
- Bell heads for Van Horn early in the morning. Passes a burning car, stops at Balmorhea, gets to Van Horn at 10.25. Finds motel where shootout took place in the night. Two men and a woman. Drives to the clinic. Moss and the girl are dead. Drives back to the motel on a hunch.
- Chigurh checks into a motel and visits crime scene. Finds money in airduct. Bells drives in as he sits back in his car. Sheriff calls for backup, Chigurh can’t be found. Bell visits Carla Jean.

Sheriff Bell won’t talk about the war, talks about the sixties, common people.

- Chigurh visits Houston building, kills the man who sent Carson Wells to kill him.
- At dawn, Carla Jean and her sick mother are at the bus station, heading for El Paso.
- After one in the morning, Chigurh visits their house, goes through their mail.

- Moss is staying at a motel, takes a cab to the bridge where he hid the money, get driver to take him to San Antonio. Sleeps at
Rodeway Inn, west of town, buys a gun. Buys a pickup, leaves and picks up a hitchhiking girl. He asks her to drive. - Bell comes home. Loretta informs him Carla Jean called. Calls back motel near El Paso, promises not to harm Moss.
- Men listening have the address.

Sheriff Bell discusses young people, his own youth during WWII, raising children today.

- Chigurh buys veterinary supplies for his wounded leg outside
Uvalde. Burns a car near a drugstore, finds medicine he needs, stops at a hotel outside Hondo, stays five days then leaves after seeing two deputies in a cafe. - Wells pretends to take touristy pictures near bridge where Moss crossed over.
- Bell is told by Molly the cars from the desert shootout belonged to people long dead. Scolds man carrying those dead bodies in his flatbed truck. Drives to Devil’s Ridge Bridge, watches sunset, is mocked by driver-by.

- Chigurh listens to signal, finds hotel, waits for Wells. They talk.
-Chigurh justifies death of deputy Haskins as “act of will.” Shoots Wells, answers Wells’ phone.
- Moss calls Odessa from his ward, speaks to Carla Jean. Calls Wells, speaks to Chigurh. Chigurh offers Moss a deal, who refuses. Moss finds a driver to take him across bridge. Buys new boots and clothes.
- Bell and deputy find Wells and dead clerk. They express dismay, speak of the drug epidemic.
