Neglect Flashcards
(10 cards)
Unilateral neglect
impairement of attention or response to meaningful stimuli or environment on the affected side, and cannot be explained by sensory or motor deficits
Homonymous hemianopia
a physical loss of visual field to the same side in both eys
Hemi-spatial inattention may occur with a homonymous hemianopia. T or F?
True
It may occur with OR without
Identify two treatment strategies for inattention / neglect
- Top-down
- Bottom-up
Top-down
focuses on training the patient to compensate for their deficit.
Bottom-up
use sensory stimulation to increase the patient’s perception of the affected space or limb (= produce automatic behaviour) *
examples of “Top-down” treatment strategy
- Modify environment (bed side table on the R instead of L)
- Visual scanning training (“light house”actively scanning for objects with cues.)
- Eye patching half visual field of each eye
examples of “Bottom-up” treatment strategy
- Trunk rotation … rotate into the affected side
- Limb activation … guidance to actively move afected arm or leg in (L) space separately from moving unaffected limb.
- Task related training, verbal cues & feedback
- Mirror therapy
Apraxia
inability to carry out purposeful skilled movements which cannot be explained by motor or sensory deficits. (left hemisphere - paraetal lobe or premotor coretex damaged)
ideomotor Apraxia
inability to carry out purposeful skilled movements on command. (may have less problems with automatic tasks especially in familiar environment)
