Q

Superfamily Ancylostomatoidea

A
  • hookworms
  • direct, L3 infective stage (potential migration to the lungs-pneumonia)
  • PPP: 2-3 wks
  • arrested development- larval leakage
  • eggs: thin shell, oval, avg size, CANT tell between spp.
  • adults: small intestine
  • bursa, teeth/cutting plates & lg buccal capsule
  • CS: hemorrhaging, anemia, ulcers, d+, coughing if lung migration, dermatitis
  • zoonotic
  • Dx: fecal float

Q

Ancylostoma caninum

A

-southern hookworm
-Host: dogs
-PPP: 2-3 weeks –> younger pups more susceptible
-transmission: TM most common, per os, percutaneous, paratenic, TP
Site of infection: small intestine
MOST PATHOGENIC from L5 stage causing hemorrhage
-limited immunity, can’t avoid infection w/o tx
-CS: anemia(messy eaters), d+, dermatitis, cough, pneumonia (larval migration in lungs), pale mm
**
will see CS but no eggs in puppies younger than 2 wks
-Dx: fecal float (centrifuge) for eggs= most sensitive test, antigen test (find immature adults), necropsy= adults with hook
-Tx: NEVER wait for fecal results, tx ASAP if suspected
-zoonotic

Q

Ancylostoma tubaeformae

A
Host: cats
Transmission: per os, percutaneous, PH, NO TM or TP (not in kittens)
-less pathogenic and less severe
-zoonotic (but less frequent)
cats like tubes**

Q

Ancylostoma braziliense

A

Host: cats and dogs
Transmission: per os, percut, PH
-less pathogenic, less of a blood sucker (not a messy eater so doesn’t cause anemia)
-cutaneous larval migrans in humans- brazil walking on the sand
-***most zoonotic!!

Q

Uncinaria stenocephala

A

-northern hookworm
Host: cats and dogs
Transmission: per os, percut, PH
-not usually pathogenic (less of a blood sucker)
-zoonotic but rare
-can cause interdigital dermatits–> when you’re up north you rub your fingers together to get warm
