Nerve Lesions Flashcards
(21 cards)
Actions of lumbricals?
Flex MCP joint, extend PIP and DIP
Loss of lumbricals cause what?
Clawing
Cause of ulnar claw?
Distal ulnar nerve lesion–due to long-standing injury to ulnar nerve at hook of hamate (FOOSH)
Cause of median claw?
Distal median nerve (after branch containing C5-7 branches off to feed forearm flexors)–due to carpal tunnel or dislocated lunate
Popes blessing?
Proximal median nerve lesion
Ape hand?
Proximal median nerve lesion
Klumpke’s total claw?
Lower trunk (C8-T1) lesion
S/S of ulnar claw?
Loss of medial lumbrical function–inability to extend 4th and 5th digits when trying to open hand
S/S of median claw?
Loss of lateral lumbricals–inability to extend 2nd and 3rd digits when trying to open hand
S/S of pope’s blessing?
Loss of lateral finger flexion and thumb opposition–unable to flex 2nd and 3rd fingers and opposed thumbs when making a fist
S/S of ape hand?
Loss of opponens pollicis–unopposable thumb
S/S of klumpke’s claw?
Loss of function of ALL lumbricals–forearm flexors and finger extensors are unopposed leading to clawing of all digits
Handlebar palsy?
Compression of ulnar nerve at hook of hamate due to keeping wrist in extension for long periods of time
Erb-Duchenne palsy?
Upper trunk (C5-C6) lesion
Thoracic outlet syndrome?
Compression of subclavian artery and lower trunk leading to klumpke’s palsy
Winged scapula?
Long thoracic nerve (C5-7) lesion
Anterior hip dislocation?
Obturator n lesion
Pelvic fracture?
Femoral n lesion
Trauma or compression of lateral aspect of leg or fibula neck fracture?
Common peroneal lesion
Posterior hip dislocation?
Superior or inferior gluteal n lesion
Polio?
Superior gluteal n loss
