Nervous and endocrine system Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the endocrine system?
Chemical signaling by the hormones.
Communication method of the endocrine system?
Hormones in the blood stream (chemicals).
Communication method in the nervous system?
Neurotransmitters causes nerve impulse (electrical).
Target of stimulation of the endocrine system?
Any target cell with a receptor for a hormone.
Target of stimulation of the nervous system?
Nerves, muscles, glands
Response time of endocrine system?
Slow
Response time of nervous system?
Fast
Effect of stimulation for endocrine system?
Changes in activity of target cell.
Effect of stimulation for nervous system?
Muscle movement and secretion from glands.
Range of effect for endocrine system?
Wide spread throughout the body, because of the blood stream.
Range of effect for nervous system?
Specific effect on in the body.
Duration of response for endocrine system?
Slow return for previous level of activity.
Duration of response for nervous system?
Fast, immediately returns to previous activity.
What is the myelin sheath?
A white fatty substance which surrounds the axon to help insulate it, helping messages transmit faster.
