Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Nervous System?
A processing Information System consisting of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System
What is the function of the central nervous system?
The CNS consists of the Brain and Spinal Cord. Its function is to process sensor input and make decisions/give order
What are the 2 prominent neuroimaging tools?
- Computerized Tomography (CT)/Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT)
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
Name the brain direction/Nomenclature
Superior (Dorsal)
Anterior(Rostral) Posterior(Caudal)
Inferior(Ventral)
Describe Sagital Brain section
Slice through the nose
Describe Coronal Brain section
Crown slice right through the head
Describe Axial/Horizontal Brain section
Top down, birds-eye view
The Central Sulcus separates the ______ and ______ lobe.
The Central Sulcus separates the frontal and parietal lobe.
The Lateral Sulcus (Sylvian Fissure) separates the ____ lobe from the _____ lobe.
The Lateral Sulcus (Sylvian Fissure) separates the temporal lobe from the parietal and frontal lobe
What is the Longitudinal Fissure
Separates the left and right hemisphere
What is the function of the peripheral nervous system?
The PNS consists of the spinal and cranial nerves. That are somatic/autonomic
Somatic Nervous System
sensory and motor Nerves that are voluntary that innervates muscle and skin
Autonomic Nervous System
(Involuntary) Sensory & motor nerves innervate visceral
organs and glands.
Sympathetic/Parasympathetic
What does the Brainstem consist of ?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla
What does the Cerebrum consists of?
Consists of two hemispheres, which each contain:
Cerebral cortex
Basal Ganglia
Diencephalon (Thalamus, hypothalamus…)
Main functions of Temporal lobe
auditory center process/interpret hearing (CLOSE TO THE EAR)
Main Functions of Occipital lobe
vision (eyes on the back of my head!) process and make use of visual input
Main functions of Parietal Lobe
sensory information, spatial processing and recognition
Main functions of Frontal Lobe
executive functioning, high order processing, speech production, emotion regulation, planning and executing
In the Cerebrum the Diencephalon consists of _______
The Thalamus and Hypothalamus
Function of Thalamus
relays sensorimotor info to the cortex “relay system” body to the brain
Function if Hypothalamus
communicates with brain, brainstem and spinal cord by neural and hormonal projections
5 functions – autonomic, endocrinic, regulatory, drive, emotion
Controls autonomic nervous system
Maintains body temperature, blood volume, food and water intake, body mass, reproduction and regulates circadian rhythm (pattern of sleep) (24-hour internal clock)
Describe/Function of Midbrain
Cranial nerve nuclei, sensory motor regulating fibers
Regulates respiration, phonation, heartbeat, blood pressure
Describe/Function of Pons
Contains cranial nerve nuclei, all descending motor and ascending sensory fibers
