Nervous System Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is a nerve?
A collection of axons and/or dendrites found outside the CNS
What is a ganglion?
A collection of neural cell bodies outside the CNS (motor or sensory neurones)
What do afferent neurones carry?
Sensory info towards CNS
What do efferent neurones carry?
Motor info away from CNS
How many pairs of cranial nerves?
12 pairs
How many pairs of spinal nerves? List categories too
31 pairs 8 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 sacral 1 coccygeal
What is after the spinal chord?
The conus medullaris
What is after the conus medullaris?
The filum terminale
What root is the ganglion found on?
Dorsal sensory root
What are the meninges called (inner to outer)
Pia mater
Arachnoid mater
Dura mater
Where do spinal nerves emerge from and what do they divide into?
Intervertebral foramen
Divide into ventral and dorsal ramus
What is a myotome?
A region of skeletal muscle innervated by a single spinal nerve/cord segment
Somatic plexuses supply
Skin, skeletal muscle and joints
Formed from ventral rami of spinal nerves
Autonomic plexuses supply
Blood vessels and viscera
Eg perivascular plexus accompany major arteries
Brachial plexus is-
Major nerves are
C5-C8 + T1 Axillary (shoulder) Radial (posterior arm forearm and hand) Musculocutaneous (anterior arm) Ulnar (anterior forearm and medial hand) Median (anterior forearm and lateral hand)
Lumbar plexus-
Major nerves are-
L1-L4
Femoral (quadriceps)
Obturator (adductors of thigh, medial to femoral nerve)
Sacral plexus -
Major nerves-
L4 L5 + S1- S4 Sciatic nerve (buttock)
Limb development is in weeks-
Formation of - by the thickening of -
Weeks 4-8
Apical ectodermal ridge formed by thickening of mesoderm at tip of bud
What is Amelia?
Absence of a limb due to developmental abnormality
What is meromelia?
Partial absence of a limb due to developmental abnormality
Rotation of the limbs- occurs in weeks - which leads to-
Upper limbs rotate laterally, lower limbs rotate medially
Between 6-8 weeks
Spiralling dermatomes
Sympathetic efferent outflow is known as
Thoracocolumnar autonomic outflow
The sympathetic ganglia can be
Prevertebral (in front, in plexuses, axons that have passed through vertebral column but not synapsed in the para)
Paravertebral (alongside, nerves connect to ganglia via RAMI COMMUNICANS, forms sympathetic chain)
What are splachnic nerves?
Go to organs, always autonomic
Can be post (heart and lungs) or preganglionic
